GUWAHATI: The regional Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) has decided to hit the street to add fuel to the ongoing movement against Citizenship (Amendment) Bill in the state.
The party, which snapped ties with the BJP on January 7 last, has chalked out a series of agitation programmes against the contentious bill that has been passed by Lok Sabha and is now awaiting nod of the Rajya Sabha.
The regional party will take out a torchlight rally on January 18 next while the party legislators will sit for a 10-hour long hunger-strike on January 24. The party will also take out protest rally across all the districts of the state on January 30.
The decision on the series of agitation programme was taken in a meeting of the AGP held on Sunday night with party president Atul Bora in the chair.
The regional party intends to take the agitation against the Citizenship Bill to the nook and corner of Brahmaputra Valley with the support of the people of the state. It maintains that the bill threatens even the existence and dignity of the historic Assam Accord.
The AGP meeting resolved that the party would leave no stone unturned to keep the integrity of the indigenous people of the state intact.
The party apart from launching independent protest has also decided to join hands with other regional and indigenous organisations of the state in continuing with agitations against the bill.
The regional party has also decided to garner country-wide support against the citizenship bill.
