SHILLONG: Time is running out for the MDA to finalise its common candidate for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections from Shillong seat while the UDP has already pitched in Jemino Mawthoh as its official candidate for the elections.
However, Chief Minister and leader of the MDA ,Conrad Sangma, is optimistic that they would be able to sort out the issues pertaining to the common candidate.
He said that discussions pertaining to common candidates from both Shillong and Tura seats were still on with the different partners.
“We are still discussing,” the Chief Minister said.
It may be mentioned that the MDA, which is supported by BJP, UDP, HSPSP, NCP, PDF and Independents, are trying to field common candidates from both the Lok Sabha constituencies of Meghalaya since long.
The BJP with two MLAs is weighing the option to field its own candidate.
The UDP is projecting its former MLA Jemino Mawthoh as its common candidate while HSPDP is projecting Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar.
Jemino Mawthoh has already started campaigning while the Congress is most likely to field its sitting MP Vincent Pala from Shillong.
While the Congress party is searching for its candidate for the Tura seat there are murmurs that NPP will field former South Tura MLA Agatha Sangma.
