SHILLONG: The name of CLP leader Mukul Sangma is doing the rounds as the probable candidate of the Congress from Tura parliamentary seat.
When asked, Congress spokesperson Zenith Sangma said the party has not decided on who should contest from Tura constituency.
Zenith, however, said talks are on and a few names have been proposed for candidature from Tura constituency. He also informed that many party members and MLAs have proposed Mukul’s name.
“So far, no one has emerged as contender for the ticket and all the names are mere proposals right now,” he added.
When contacted, Mukul denied saying there is no such plan to contest from Tura. “The party will decide names of candidates for both the seats very soon,” he added.
In the last Lok Sabha election in 2014, the Congress had fielded Daryl William Ch Momin against Purno Sangma and the latter won.
After the sudden death of Purno, another by-election was held in Tura in 2016 where Congress fielded Dikkanchi Shira against Conrad Sangma and again it lost.
As Conrad began his innings as chief minister last year, he resigned as the member of the Lok Sabha.
