SHILLONG: UDP leaders visited the Saipung C&RD Block office in East Jaintia Hills on Monday which was inaugurated by its late leader EK Mawlong in 2001. The block office was found to be closed due to poor road connectivity.
In a statement issued here, the general secretary of UDP, Jemino Mawthoh, claimed that the people of the area are angry at the non-functioning of the C&RD Office since 2014 and also the animal husbandry office. The UDP leaders also visited the school located in the area on the same day.
“The reason for the closure of the block office was due to the deplorable road condition in and around the area, thereby making communication difficult,” Mawthoh said, adding that the stretch from Lafarge (cement factory), Saipung, Saizol, Thuruk, Saibual, till Mualsei requires immediate attention.
The villagers expressed dissatisfaction over the lack of initiative by the previous government to construct the road.
UDP also held a public meeting on the same day at Saipung which was attended by supporters from 27 villages falling under Saipung constituency.
The meeting was chaired by Finelyness Bareh, president of UDP East Jaintia Hills, in the presence of the advisor to the party’s East Jaintia Hills unit Kor Sympli, vice president Drowell Lapasam and MDC candidates from Jaintia Hills — Lakhon Biam, Krison Langstang, Shanbor Lamare, Emlangki Lamare, Sanky Shangpung and Zosiama Thianglai.
The UDP Saipung circle was also constituted. The following are the office bearers: Kungliona Darnei as president, Thianga Nampui as vice president and Sangpuia Nampui as secretary.
