Minor tribal girl gang-raped in Tripura, three nabbed
Ambassa: Three tribal youths have been arrested after the allegation of gangrape of a girl in rented house in the subdivision of Ambassa in the northern Tripura district of Dhalai here on Friday. According to the information, two minor tribal sisters from Harinchara area in the subdivision has been residing at the residence of Dinesh Debnath of TRTC Para on rent. Three tribal boys identified as Ankush Debbarma, Rajendra Riang and Lagen Riang forcibly entered the rented house on Friday afternoon, assaulted the elder sister and gang-raped her. Immediately after getting the information, their father lodged a complaint with the police. Ambassa police has registered a case under sections 376, 511, 354(B), 34 of IPC and 4 or POCSO Act and arrested the trio. The incident has sparked resentment among the local people. (UNI)
Assam govt remits sentences of petty criminals on R-Day
Guwahati: Assam government has decided to remit the sentences of certain categories of prisoners, who are originally from the state and convicted for petty crimes, on the occasion of the Republic Day on Saturday. Prisoners with sentences above one year will get a remission of 30 days while those with sentences from six months to one year will get 15 days, an official release said on Friday. Those serving sentence from three months to six months will get 10 days remission while prisoners with sentence above one month upto three months will get 5 days. The remission will be effective from Saturday, the release added. The remission granted under this order, however, shall not be applicable to prisoners sentenced for major offences such as corruption, adulteration of food, human trafficking, drug peddling and rape. Security beefed up for R-Day in Manipur, Mizoram
Imphal/ Aizawl: The Manipur government is preparing for observation of Republic Day on Saturday. Security has been beefed up, as militants have called for boycott of the celebration. Security personnel on Friday randomly checked people vehicles. Transport department announced that there will be restriction of vehicles on Saturday until the observation is over. The proscribed umbrella organisation Alliance for Socialist Unity, Kangleipak and CorCom have put a ban on the observation. A total shut down from 6 am to 6 pm has been imposed on January 26. In Mizoram, elaborate security arrangements have been made for Saturday’s Republic Day function here, in view of the boycott call by the NGO Coordination Committee, a senior police officer said on Friday. The officer said that armed policemen with complete anti-riot gears would be deployed in around the Assam Rifles ground, the venue where Mizoram Governor Kummanam Rajasekharan is to address the Republic Day official function at 8 am on Saturday. The NGO Coordination Committee, an umbrella body of civil societies and student associations gave the boycott call in protest against the proposed Citizenship Amendment Bill. (Agencies)
