SHILLONG: Convener of SOMALA & Co-Convener of KKNMS, W. Anthony said the amendments to the Sixth Schedule related to Village and Municipal Council and one-third reservation of seats for women are vague.
In a statement issued here, Social Organizations of Meghalaya against Land Alienation (SOMALA) and co-convener of Kynhun ki Nongtrei Mon Sngewbha (KKNMS) took exception to the words “for the time being.” He added that a meeting with the Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on November 30, 2018, there was a recommendation to provide a suitable proviso to keep out the Village and Municipal Councils from the purview of the Amendment Bill 2015. “We expect that the state government will do the needful in this regard,” he said.
He observed that the State Election Commission occupies a prominent place in the proposed amendment of the Sixth Schedule which is the dilution and not strengthening of the Sixth Schedule. He added the State Election Commission is a constituent part of the 73rd and 74th amendment of the Constitution and both the amendments are not to operate in the state.
