New Delhi: Leaders of 21 opposition parties, including Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Friday decided to approach the Election Commission to demand 50 percent of Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) votes should tally with the VVPAT in the coming elections.
The opposition parties will meet the poll body on Monday and hand over the document prepared by them. ”On EVMs, we have put together a document and we will submit this to Election Commission on Monday”, said Rahul after the meeting.
He added that the main issue with EVMs is that many doubt the fairness of this system. ”We want to create a backup system and build confidence of people in the electoral system”, the Congress president added at the press conference, which was attended by top leaders of opposition parties.
”The meeting was attended by more than 21 political parties. Our primary demand to the Election Commission that the mandatory counting of 50 percent of VVPAT across the constituencies, which has to be selected randomly,” RJD leader Manoj Jha told UNI. (UNI)
