SHILLONG: The North Garo Hills district administration has requested the North East Frontier Railway (NFR) to introduce more passenger and goods trains at Mendipathar, which is the only railway station in Meghalaya.
North Garo Hills DC, SC Sadhu, said that they have asked NFR to bring more passenger and goods trains. He said the NFR may introduce more freight trains if demand grows in future.
Stating that the Food Corporation of India is planning to set up a warehouse near the railway station, he added that it plans to supply materials through the railways and if the idea materialises, goods can be transported at cheaper rates.
Mendipathar is presently served by only one train that leaves in the morning for Guwahati and returns at night.
On the other hand, the other proposed railway lines –Tetelia-Byrnihat and Byrnihat-Shillong–have made no progress due to stiff opposition from various groups which fear that railways would increase influx.
