SHILLONG: History was scripted here on Saturday when the Qur’an, the religious book of the Muslims, was released in the Khasi language bringing to an end 12 years of painstaking labour. The translation, running into 1251 pre-pages and pages, was done at the initiative of the Seng Bhalang Islam, a city-based organisation that propagates Islam.
The Qur’an was released by Phulbari MLA SG Estamur Mominin in presence of South Shillong MLA, Sanbor Shullai , Sartaz Ahmed, scholar from Kanpur, and retired NEHU Professor, K Ismail, among others at a function Deba Kumar Hall, Bishnupur.
Speaking on the occasion, Mominin lauded the Seng Bhalang Islam for taking up the difficult task of translating the Qur’an into Khasi language.
He said that over time the holy book has been translated into many languages across the world by renowned scholars.
“ With this translation people would come to know what the Qur’an says and it would be of great benefit for people even from other communities,” he said.
Terming it as a historic moment, Mominin said that it is important for the people to read the Qur’an carefully and try to inculcate and practise the teachings of the holy book in their lives.
Sanbor Shullai lauded the Seng Bhalang Islam for coming out with the translation of the holy book in the local language and added that it will open a window for people to understand and appreciate it.
Mubarak Lyngdoh, president of the Seng Bhalang Islam, said that they decided to translate the Qur’an into Khasi since people have been asking them about what the holy book is all about and what it says.
He said that an editorial board took 12 years to translate the holy book from English to Khasi and it was also given to well-known scholars for correction.
He said that everyone should know about the Qur’an since the holy book was revealed not only for Muslims but for the entire humanity.
