GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has urged the accredited social health activists (ASHAs) and employees of National Health Mission (NHM) to take the message of government health schemes to the grassroots.
“ASHAs need to function as a bridge between the government and people. They have to generate more awareness among people about healthy lifestyles and promoting cleanliness in society,” Sonowal said, while taking part at the 2nd ASHA and NHM convention organised by the Assam health department at Sarusajai here on Sunday, informs an official statement.
The convention organised after a gap of ten years was an endeavour to recognize and appreciate the valuable contributions made by field level functionaries of NHM in improving health care delivery system in the state.
Currently, 31,955 ASHA workers and 20,921 employees are working in various categories under NHM in Assam.
Lauding the services rendered by the ASHA and NHM employees, Sonowal said the state government has taken up health as a priority sector.
In a bid to address the shortage of medical professionals, he said the government has put special focus on increasing the number of medical colleges and nursing institutions.
