TURA: The Anti Corruption Human Development Organization (ACHDO), an organization based in the plain belt region of West Garo Hills has urged the state government to make Garo subject compulsory for all schools in the area.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the organization revealed that although there are many English medium schools in the plain belt region, most of the schools were using Assamese language as the medium of instruction.

“I fail to understand the use of Assamese in English medium schools in Garo Hills. We belong to Meghalaya and have nothing to do with Assam then why is Assamese being used to teach the children,” the organization said adding the situation has made communication difficult for youths of the region.

The organization said that the Garo Language is the identity of Garo Hills which the people of the plain belt areas are unfamiliar with due to the practice in these schools. It added that if Assamese was being used as a medium of instruction in these schools it was illogical in calling them English medium schools.

“We want the education department as well as the government to take note and make Garo subject compulsory in these schools. Also the medium of instruction should be changed to English in English medium schools,” the organization demanded.
