SHILLONG: Co-Chairman of State Level Public Grievances Committee, Paul Lyngdoh has written to Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on the need for proactive mechanism against influx. As the demand for implementation of Inner Line Permit (ILP) has gained momentum, he said the need for such a law has never been felt more acutely than at this point of time when mainstream political parties are actively converting North East into their permanent vote banks.
He observed that the move of the mainstream political parties will damage the demographic balance of the state and reduce the indigenous population to helpless minorities.
He recalled that in 2012, the High Level Committee headed by then Deputy Chief Minister, BM Lanong had unequivocally recommended the introduction of ILP system which was reiterated by the members of UDP, HSPDP, and the GNC on the floor of the Assembly through an adjournment motion in 2013.
Pointing to the Manipur People Act, 2018 which Lyngdoh said is as good as having the ILP in place, he said that the BJP and NPP are in power in Manipur.
According to him with Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh having adequate laws in place, the pressure of immigration will be more on Meghalaya in the absence of ILP or a law similar to it as voiced by the Confederation of Hynniewtrep Social Organisations (CoHSO).
He urged the CM to act decisively and boldly in the best interest of the indigenous communities of the state.
