Khyndailad to be declared zero-litter zone

SHILLONG: The Shillong Municipal Board has informed that it will be undertaking a programme to intensify the monitoring of compliance with the Solid Waste Management Rules 2016.
As part of this programme, a pilot operation under the name ‘Operation Zero Litter’, will commence on February 15 to turn the area around Khyndailad into a litter free zone. The Shillong Municipal Board will also partner with the Home Guards and Civil Defense including the Meghalaya Bharat Scouts and Guides in generating public awareness on the hazards of littering besides monitoring the streets to identify and penalize violators. “From February 15 , Khyndai-Lad and Police Bazaar areas will be declared as zero-litter zones” an official statement said.
If found littering, violators shall be booked and penalized under the SWM Rules 2016 and the Environmental Protection Act 1986, the statement added.
