Five Meghalaya artisans get State Handicrafts Awards 2017-18

SHILLONG: Five artisans were awarded the State Handicrafts Awards, 2017-18 at a function held at the Department of Commerce and Industries here on Friday.
The award winners are : Kretis Rynjah from Madan Laban, Albina Jyrwa from Tynnai village in South West Khasi Hills, Clement Sangma from Mendal in North Garo Hills, Daisy Christine G. Momin, Chandmary in West Garo Hills and Ram Kynjing Panaliar, Jowai, West Jaintia Hills.
Speaking at the function, Commissioner & Secretary, M.R. Synrem said the artisans could also cater to bulk orders of handicraft products from the state.
He encouraged the artisans to participate in national awards. “We have the talent, capacity and capability and we have to work hard and do well but we need to persevere,”  he said.
Synrem asked the five artisans to share and contribute their skills with others.
Handicrafts sector has been one of the means of livelihood for the tribes of Khasi, Jaintia and Garo communities
