SHILLONG: The North Eastern Hills University Students’ Union (NEHUSU) has criticized the NEHU administration over erratic power and water supply, poor hostel facilities and lack of hostel accommodation within the campus.
The NEHUSU along with the NEHU teachers Association (NEHUTA) and the Joint Action Committee of NEHU unions have decided to organise a meeting for students to discuss the issues which also include wifi connectivity.
In this regard, the union has provided a one month window for the NEHU administration to resolve all the problems faced by the students.
Speaking to reporters on Thursday, NEHUSU finance secretary Iarapbhathik Shangrit said: “If no decision is made within a month, the Joint Action Committee (JAC), NEHUSU and NEHUTA will take their own decision to force the VC to resign or resort to other measures to fulfill the demands.”
The union also expressed concern on the erratic power supply which has affected both students and teachers.
Referring to hostel issues, Shangrit said: “The NEHU administration should have leased hostels from outside the campus. The number of seats for hostel accommodation is increasing but the number of hostels is not.”
According to the NEHUSU finance secretary, students from other states or rural areas are forced to find accommodation elsewhere.
The union demanded that that administration should lease hostels from outside the campus alleging that the campus hostels lack proper maintenance with students being served unhygienic food.
Shangrit also informed that there is a bamboo hostel in NEHU but the administration gave it away to NIT students instead of giving preference to its own students.
“Students are often fined and expelled from the hostel as well. These are the issues we want to bring forth before the administration,” he said.
Shangrit also stated that the healthcare facility has its shortcomings as well with hardly any doctors or nurses present.
