SHILLONG: Adolescent Health Month was recently celebrated in Mawtneng Village of Ri Bhoi District with a football match and free screening camps for anemia, oral health problems and non-communicable diseases.
The function was attended by Secretary Health & Family Welfare and Mission Director of NHM, Pravin Bakshi as chief guest.
Vivek Yadav, Chief of the party USAID Jhpiego, India, Dr. L.M Pdah, Director Health Services (MCH&FW), Dr. M. Mawrie, District Medical and Health Officer of Ri Bhoi District and various state and district level nodal officers of various programmes were present.
There were demonstrations on physical activities by a trained athlete to create awareness on being healthy. Free health screening camps were set up to screen for anemia, oral health problems and non-communicable diseases like diabetes, hypertension, cancers etc by doctors and dentists.
Speaking at the programme, Bakshi stressed on the fact that adolescents need a promising future; therefore, it is a crucial to address their needs at the right time. He also highlighted the importance of preventive and primitive health care through the implementation of the Health and Wellness Centres in various parts of the state.
Dr Yadav applauded the active community participation at the health and wellness event, where hundreds of adolescents and even the elderly took part. He shared on how USAID & Jhpiego are providing technical support to Meghalaya for strengthening health and wellness centres and community health course.
Others who spoke at the function are Dr L. M Pdah, DHS (MCH & FW) and Dr. A. J. Syiemlieh.
The same kind of events was also held in West Garo Hills and West Jaintia Hills.
