TURA: Highlighting the importance of ensuring proper health care reaches to people living in the rural areas, Bakdil non-governmental organisation organised a special programme to celebrate its ten years of providing service at the Wageasi primary health centre, East Garo Hills, on Friday.
The health centre at Wageasi in North Garo Hills district, located on the highway connecting North and East Garo Hills, was handed over to Bakdil by the State Government to raise the standard of health care in the region where countless number of villages has little or no option but to head to distant Resubelpara or Williamnagar for medical treatment.
Since taking over of Wageasi PHC by Bakdil, there has been a huge improvement of health care with a rise in immunisation programmes, institution delivery of pregnant women and more awareness about health issues.
Lauding the efforts of Bakdil, Kharkutta legislator and parliamentary secretary Rupert W Momin said that Bakdil has being doing a yeoman service in the health sector for the people of not just Wageasi but also its adjoining areas.
“Wageasi is a very important place and junction because the national highway passes through the area. Earlier, there was a government office belonging to the Soil and Water Conservation department in Wageasi but due to various causes it was closed down. Today Bakdil run Wageasi PHC is the most important institution in the area by providing much needed health service to the people,” said Momin.
He added that with the smooth running of the health centre by Bakdil children and mothers’ health have improved dramatically in the region.
