SHILLONG: The High Court of Meghalaya has asked the Civil Aviation department to take final measures for ensuring operation of flights from Umroi airport to metros.
During the hearing on the pending matter on Friday, the division bench comprising Chief Justice Mohammad Yaqoob Mir and Justice SR Sen, said some airliners have projected difficulty in operating flights.
The Centre submitted that a week’s time may be granted to the Civil Aviation department for filing a detailed affidavit.
“We have clearly indicated as to what measures have been taken and are to be taken for operationalisation of the airport i.e. for ensuring landing and taking-off aircraft from Umroi airport to metros, a week’s time is granted but we hope and trust that Civil Aviation department will not seek any further extension of time”, the court said.
Irregular flights
The court also expressed concern over the irregular flights from Umroi to Kolkata. “It has been brought to our notice that as usual Alliance Air is operating ATR 72 from Kolkata to Umroi but quite frequently flights are cancelled”, the court observed.
In this context, the court ordered the Chief Executive Officer of Allied Services Limited (Alliance Air) to file an affidavit wherein the officer should clearly indicate, from January 1 till date, how many flights have been operated and how many flights have been cancelled day and date wise within one week.
The matter will come up for hearing on February 25.
