SHILLONG: The campaign for district council elections in Mawsynram on Saturday was marked by confusion and alleged model code violation.
The time and place for Chief Minister Conrad Sangma’s public address and the Congress’s poll rally coincided and the former event had to be deferred by an hour to let the opposition party continue with the campaign.
The chief minister addressed a gathering at Dangar. Both the events went off peacefully.
However, Congress workers in Mawsynram block lodged a verbal complaint with the local police against Sangma who attended the meeting with police escort.
According to the model code of conduct of the district council elections, the party in power should ensure that “no cause is given for any complaint that it has used its official position” for canvassing. It also bars use of government transport, including official vehicles, machinery and personnel.
When asked, NPP sources admitted that “some incident” took place but they did not want it to be publicised.
When contacted, police officials denied the incident saying nothing happened and “some people have spread rumours”.
