TURA: Batsrang A Sangma from Tebronggre Village in West Garo Hills who just recently brought glory to the region and the state as a whole by winning the 3rd edition of the Delhi half Marathon, was on Monday treated to a grand welcome by the A Sangma clan at Rongram about three kilometers from his native village.

The 22-year-old from Tebronggre Village became a marathon sensation overnight after he won the marathon in the non elite (amateur, 18-25) category. What was more astonishing about his achievement was that he placed 2nd in the overall run behind the professional (elite) run winner by just one minute.

The felicitation of Batsrang on Monday was jointly organized by the A’gitok Mahari Association (AMA) and the Tebronggre Youth and Cultural Organization (TYCO). A large crowd eagerly waited for the young athlete at Rongram and soon after his arrival, he was showered with flowers, bouquets and garlands and a traditional A’chik headgear placed on his head as a mark of respect for his one of a kind achievement.

It may be mentioned that Batsrang, who is the son of a farmer earlier this year too, hit the podium at the Kolkata Half Marathon standing 3rd in the amateur category. Both the runs where he finished in the podium were Athletic Federation of India and International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS) certified races.
