Woman cop injured
SHILLONG: A lady traffic police was allegedly injured during an election rally on Monday. When contacted, the Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills, MW War said that she did not receive any complaint as such, however, it was learnt that the lady cop was not beaten up as per the rumours. “There was a taxi/car which was travelling beyond rules and she stopped the vehicle. The female cop asked the driver to get out of the car and when the driver was doing so, she was hit by the vehicle door,” War said.

Meritorious students to be felicitated
SHILLONG: Seng Kur Ki Khun Ka Khmah Lyngdoh Mawphlang will felicitate youngsters who have successfully passed various exams during 2018 securing not less than 80 per cent in Class X & XII. For Degree level & Masters, Medical, Engineering and others should be 1st Class and above. The interested candidates must submit their applications along with marksheets to the General Secretary central body or through unit secretary before first week of April.

National workshop held in NEIGRIHMS
SHILLONG: Two-day National workshop on ‘Health Economics and Outcome Analysis’ was recently organised by the Department of Pharmacology, NEIGRIHMS. A number of participants from Medical and Allied Fraternities from NEIGRIHMS and other establishments of North East attended the workshop. Renowned Pharmacologists, Pharmacists and Economist like Dr Biswadeep Das (Assoc Prof & HoD, AIIMS Rishikesh), Mahendra Kumar Rai (IQVIA as a Head & SME); Dr Utpal Kumar De (Professor, Economics Deptt, NEHU); and faculty members of NEIGRIHMS, shared their knowledge and expertise which correlated with the theme and objective of the workshop.

National Science Day celebrated
SHILLONG: As part of the celebration of National Science Day, a number of workshops were organised by the Shillong Science Centre, NEHU Campus. A one-day workshop on astronomy was conducted by Shri R. Chaterjee at Shillong Science Centre, where a number of schools from the city participated, followed by a two-day workshop on Robotics “Fun with Learning by Lego” where hands on activities on Robotics were held for the first time in the State conducted by A. Saha, CEO, Technomate, Edubotics Pvt. Ltd., Guwahati in the Innovation Hub of Shillong Science Centre. Survey of India will celebrate National Science Day under the theme Science for the People and People for Science. Exhibition will be open to the public and students from 11 am to 4 pm on February 28.

GH students win at Start-Up India event
TURA: Students from Don Bosco College in Tura have brought laurels to Garo Hills by getting top honours at the just concluded ‘Start-Up India’ event organised at the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Shillong. Four students of the college, Naman Chettri, Koyal Saha, Bishnu Kant Panthi and Varsha Joshi won prizes in various categories involving business ideas and farming practices for sustainable living. The two-day event, ‘Start-up India’ event was organised by the Directorate of Commerce and Industries, and Invest India at IIM, Shillong. The four young students of Don Bosco College were selected to represent Garo Hills during the ‘Boot Camp’ by ‘Start-Up India’ Meghalaya Yatra that took place at Tura Government College on February 20. Brimming with ideas, Koyal Saha and Bishnu Kant Panthi presented before the jurists at the event their idea of starting business and expanding it to the entire country by coming up with their own brand.Both Saha and Panthi, fourth semester students of the college, jointly started their own business while studying in the college. They stood fourth among the top five finalists at the event. On the other hand, Chettri, who is a fourth semester Bachelor of Science student of the college, presented the idea of organic farming for sustainable living. He displayed to the audience and the judges his development of a solution called ‘farganic’ which is a component for fertilizer and pesticide. Though still a college student, his ‘fargaic’ farm solution is already on sale at different marketing points in the gegion. Young Joshi, who is doing her fourth semester of Bachelor of Commerce, was awarded for her idea of online food delivery in the lines of Swiggy and others that have taken cities by storm. Joshi has named her enterprise as ‘foodiemood’ and hopes to make an impact in the hot and happening food delivery market.

GH runner gets grand welcome
TURA: Batsrang A Sangma from Tebronggre Village in West Garo Hills who just recently brought glory to the region and the state as a whole by winning the 3rd edition of the Delhi half Marathon, was on Monday treated to a grand welcome by the A Sangma clan at Rongram about three kilometers from his native village. The 22-year-old from Tebronggre Village became a marathon sensation overnight after he won the marathon in the non elite (amateur, 18-25) category. What was more astonishing about his achievement was that he placed 2nd in the overall run behind the professional (elite) run winner by just one minute. The felicitation of Sangma on Monday was jointly organized by the A’gitok Mahari Association (AMA) and the Tebronggre Youth and Cultural Organization (TYCO). A large crowd eagerly waited for the young athlete at Rongram and soon after his arrival, he was showered with flowers, bouquets and garlands and a traditional A’chik headgear placed on his head as a mark of respect for his one of a kind achievement.

Kisan Mela showcases farmers’ produce
TURA: To enable farmers to showcase their various agricultural produces and simultaneously sensitising them about the schemes under agriculture and its allied sectors, Kisan Mela was organised at Mini Stadium, Resubelpara in North Garo Hills on Monday. The event was organised by the Agricultural Technology Management Agency in Tandem with Agriculture Department of North Garo Hills. Speaking during the programme as chief guest, Deputy Speaker and local MLA, T D Shira lauded the department for their endeavour in connecting the farming community and the agriculture sectors under one platform. He said the event will help farmers to have access to information on various agricultural schemes which according to him will benefit the farming community in many ways. DC S C Sadhu opined that by introducing modern agricultural practices to the local farmers, the farming productivity could be increased. However the use of modern technology should not hamper the ecological balance of the region, he advocated.
