UDP creates history in Langrin

MAWKYRWAT/NONGSTOIN/NONGPOH: After more than 20 years, the United Democratic Party (UDP) finally created history in Langrin (Ranikor) constituency, South West Khasi Hills, after winning the 2019 district council elections by defeating NPP candidate Kitborlang Nongrem by a margin of 2,414 votes.
The UDP had unsuccessfully fought the district council elections from Langrin since 1999. Kolos Shangdiar was the candidate in the 1999 election. In 2004 and 2009, Khrang Lyngkhoi was the candidate. In the 2014 KHADC election, former MLA (L) Probin K Raswai was the candidate and in 2019, Nassar Marwein was the candidate of the UDP.
However, this time Nassar Marwein, headman of Umsur village in Borsohra area, finally defeated NPP candidate Kitborlang Nongrem. Marwein secured a total of 11,313 votes of the total 26,575 votes cast while Nongrem secured 8,924.
In Mawkyrwat, Congress candidate Carness Sohshang who lost the last Assembly Election to HSPDP candidate Renikton L Tongkhar won the district council election by defeating HSPDP’s Nolipstar Lyngdoh by a margin of 1,660 votes. Sohshang secured a total of 9,579 votes while Lyngdoh secured 7,919.
In Nongstoin, Congress’s Gabriel Wahlang defeated NPP’s Apsharailang Syiem by a margin of over 5,000 votes. While the former got 14,682 votes the latter got 8,903.
In Rambrai-Jyrngam, Bajop Pyngrope of the Congress won with 9,268 votes and World Champion Paliar of NPP trailed with 6,494 votes.
The newly elected MDC of Nongstoin and Rambrai-Jyrngam along with party leaders and supporters took out a rally on Saturday from the DC office to Congress Bhavan and held a public meeting there.
Another constituency where the Congress won is Mairang and UDP came second. Gigur Myrthong of NPP won from Mawshynrut with 11,045 votes and Congress’s Srally Rashir secured 8,374.
In Pariong Mawthadraishan, Jambor War of UDP won with 13,628 votes defeating Congress’s Blandingstar Warjri.
In Ri Bhoi, all but one constituency saw return of the sitting MDC. NPP’s Victor Ranee was re-elected from Jirang. He secured the highest vote in the district in the last KHADC election and repeated the feat.
Balajied Rani and Charles Marngar of the Congress won from Nongpoh and Mawhati, respectively, Magdalene Sawkmie Mawlong of PDF from Umsning and Rangkynsai Kharbuki of NPP from Umroi.
