SHILLONG: The twenty-nine newly-elected MDCs of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) was sworn in on Wednesday.
Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills, Matsiewdor War Nongbri administered the oath to the newly-elected MDCs.
The NPP MDC from Sohryngkham, Pyniaid Sing Syiem and Independent MDC from Mawlai Teibor Pathaw took the oath in Khasi while the rest took in English.
Since the oath taking ceremony was done constituency wise, the UDP MDC of Lyngkyrdem-Laitkroh, Ryngkatlang Lyndem missed as he was late. He later took the oath only after the rest 28 MDCs had been sworn in.
The KHADC also has only two women MDCs – Congress MDC Grace Mary Kharpuri and lone People’s Democratic Front (PDF) MDC Macdalyn Sawkmie Mawlong.
There were three woken MDCs in the previous KHADC – Kharpuri who retained her Nongshken seat, Teilinia Thangkhiew and Rona Khymdeit. Interestingly, Thangkhiew and Khymdeit have been defeated by Congress rivals from their respective constituencies of Mylliem and Nongpoh in the recently held district council polls.
The filing for nominations for Chairman of KHADC and Chief Executive Member (CEM) and the scrutiny of the papers was done on the same day.
The UDP MDC from Shella, Teiñwell Dkhar and the NPP MDC from Mawkhar-Pynthorumkhrah, Pynshngaiñ Syiem filed nomination for the posts of for CEM and Chairman respectively. Their papers were found valid.
The election to the post of Chairman and CEM will be held on Thursday at 11 am and 2 pm respectively.
The Congress which has won 10 seats in the KHADC has decided to sit in the opposition and will not contest the Chairman and CEM post.
