SHILLONG: UDP MDC Paul Lyngdoh said the oath-taking ceremony in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) should be conducted in Khasi language besides mooting the idea of singing the Khasi National anthem at the start and end of the session.

The former president of Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) said singing the Khasi National anthem would inspire the MDCs and work hard towards ensuring the protection of the unique identity of the Khasis.

Earlier, UDP MDC Teibor Pathaw spoke about the manner in which the oath is being administered stating that the oath should be administered by a protem Chairman and not by officials.

It may be mentioned that the oath was administered by the Deputy Commissioner East Khasi Hills to the newly elected MDCs on Wednesday.

Again, he suggested that the MDCs should be addressed by fellow members as per their constituency and not by their names as followed in the Legislative Assembly.

The two spoke at the time when they stood up to congratulate the PN Syiem who was elected as Chairman of the KHADC.

Delivering his speech after being elected as the Chairman, Syiem echoed the sentiments of Lyngdoh who said that singing the Khasi National Anthem would make the atmosphere more solemn and inspire the love for the Khasi community.

As for the oath-taking ceremony to be done in Khasi, he said experts in Khasi language would be consulted about the matter.
