SHILLONG: The Opposition Congress is yet to take a final call on candidates for the two Lok Sabha seats in the state even though there is a section rooting for former chief minister and CLP leader Mukul Sangma to contest the upcoming polls from Tura.
Congress spokesperson Zenith Sangma, who himself has applied for contesting the polls from Tura, said the Central Election Committee of the party would take a final call on who should contest the elections.
He denied any internal bickering in the party as some leaders want Mukul Sangma to contest the Lok Sabha elections. He said some leaders have proposed the name of the CLP leader to contest the Lok Sabha elections as they feel that he is the best choice for the Congress.Maintaining that nothing has been finalised as of now, he added that there are also some leaders who feel that Mukul Sangma should stay in state politics for some more time as he is required here.
It may be mentioned that several leaders, including Ampareen Lyngdoh, and sitting MP from Shillong, Vincent Pala, feel that Mukul Sangma will be the best bet for the party to contest the elections from Tura seat.
He also said that the party does not see the upcoming elections as a challenge since it is confident of winning both the Shillong and Tura seats while adding that there is no dearth of leaders in the party.
He also refuted the idea that NPP is a force to reckon with in Tura.
