SHILLONG: Congress MDC Stevie Marak has accused the NPP-led executive committee of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) of violating the model code of conduct.
Marak said on the night of March 1, the present NPP-led GHADC executive committee met at Tura Circuit House, created minutes of a meeting held on March 7 and issued cheques to withdraw 60 per cent of the recently released Excluded Area Fund of Rs 31,00,40,000.
“This is in total violation of the model code of conduct for the upcoming MP elections, which came in force when the election dates were announced. This is an indication of mala fide intention, where the money withdrawn will be used for the upcoming MP elections. More disturbing is the fact that the present Secretary, who is an MCS cadre, is also privy to the malpractice,” the MDC said.
He said the money was transferred from the deputy commissioner’s account to the GHADC account only on March 8 and 9 was a second Saturday, and the 10th a Sunday, which were bank holidays.
“The money sanctioned is for development of Garo Hills not to be used in the elections,” he said.
The Congress MDC has asked for a CBI inquiry into this matter.
This is the first complaint of violation of the model code of conduct after the Lok Sabha elections were announced on Sunday.
