Tripura man gets 10 years in jail for raping minor
Agartala: A local court of Gomati district has sentenced a 32 years old man to 10 years rigorous imprisonment for raping a nine years old girl from Taidu in July last year, police said on Sunday. According to report, the convicted Lal Molsom Kaipeng of village Lungfung in Ampi had taken away the minor girl to a nearby jungle by force and raped her. After committing the crime, the convicted person had handed her over a 10 rupees note and warned her with threat if she disclosed it among villagers he would kill her. However, after the victim parents came to know about the incident and filed a case in Taidu police station. Accordingly, police had started investigation, arrested the accused and submitted charge sheet. A total 19 witnesses have given statements for the victim. After a long trail the court found him to be guilty under section 375(2) (1) and POSCO Act. The court convicted for 10 years rigorous imprisonment and penalty of Rs 25,000. Failure the payment he has to suffer another six months imprisonment. (UNI)
Collaborations between Assam and Punjab Univ discussed
Chandigarh: Professor Raj Kumar, Vice-Chancellor, Panjab University held a meeting with Maninder Singh, Principal Secretary, Govt. of Assam, here on Sunday. Assam Government has offered Shrimanta Sankardeva Chair to Panjab University. It was discussed to link Research on various saints of Bhakti movement with the teaching of Shrimanta Sankardeva. Digitization of sculptures/literature related to Shrimanta Sankardeva and spreading its messages through social media and technology was also considered. In the field of Bio-Technology, mutual collaboration for translating the same into economic benefits through its application in the development of products, processes and services exploiting the rich flora and fauna of Assam entailing field of agriculture, fisheries, healthcare, animal studies, energy and environment was discussed in details. Some selected local varieties of rice, banana, ginger and turmeric will be analyzed for their medicinal potential. Adaptation of selected varieties for growing in Northern India, biotechnology intervention for generation of energy, generation of petroleum products, biotechnology solutions for pollution control mechanisms, transfer of enabling technologies pan India industry by collaborative research projects, hand holdings, twining arrangements, students internships and faculty exchanges were discussed. Lost carbine found after 35 yrs
Agartala: At a time when campaign of Loksabha election at peak, confusion erupted with the recovery of a carbine from the bank of river Gomati, which was claimed to be sank with a BSF jawan in the river in 1984. According to report, BSF personnel drown into river Gomati with his service weapon in boat capsize. Though the body of the jawan was recovered, his service carbine was not found. On Saturday, two youths identified as Biswajit Debnath and Goutam Singh went to river bank to collect firewood. They had noticed the firearm and informed police and BSF jawans who seized it. Police said, about 35 years ago, a BSF Jawan laden with a similar carbine was drowned in the river as his boat capsized. There is every possibility that it is the same carbine and added, “We have launched investigation into the recovery of weapon.” (UNI)
