GUWAHATI: One person was caught red handed with contraband brown sugar worth around Rs 2 crore of by a combined team of Manipur Police and Assam Rifles while he was trying to smuggle it to Imphal.
The man identified as Haopu Haokip, 33 years of age from Phaicham Veng (village) of Binda Part-III, Moreh near Indo-Myanmar border in Tengnoupal District which is 100 kilometres from Imphal.
According to reports, acting on a specific input a team led by DSP of Moreh Commando (Manipur Police) Thomas Thokchom along with a team from 12th Assam Rifles of Khudengthabi Post (Imphal-Moreh road) were stationed on the National Highway 102, Imphal-Moreh Road on Tuesday at around 12 in the noon.
Upon waiting for some time the team intercepted a Silver coloured Maruti Alto 800 car travelling from Moreh to Imphal near Khudengthabi Check Post. The team carried a thorough search of the vehicle and found 70 packets of light brown coloured powder suspected to be brown sugar weighing around 936 grams hidden under the seat of the driver.
Till March, this year security forces had seized contraband drugs worth more than Rs 100 crores from the Imphal-Moreh road in Tengnoupal district.
