Williamnagar citizens given awareness on human rights

WILLIAMNAGAR: The Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC), organized a one-day Awareness Program on Human Rights in Williamnagar at Loyola College on Wednesday wherein a large number of students, teachers, prominent citizens, elders and the leaders of NGOs participated.

The chief guest on the occasion. Dr. Justice Aftab H Saikia, the Chairperson of MHRC and the former Chief Justice of Sikkim and Jammu and Kashmir High Courts, spoke at length about the protection of human rights under the provisions of the Indian Constitution. Highlighting the importance of the Constitution of India, Dr. Justice Saikia said that it is the holy book for every Indian citizen. He also informed the gathering that the MHRC had been constituted in 2016 under the Articles 19 and 21 of the Constitution of India.

The guest of honour, PJP Hanemann, former Director General of Police, Meghalaya and a member of the MHRC, while highlighting the duties and activities of the Commission, said that 3-member MHRC had been constituted under Section 21 of the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993.

The President of Williamnagar Bar Association, Challang Artius Ch Marak, also spoke at length enlightening the gathering about the categories of human rights.

During the program, Dr. Justice Saikia also released a book titled “Sense of an Obligation” written by Dr. Petevile Chasie, Head of the Department of History at Loyola College, in the presence of FS Sangma, Chief Judicial Magistrate, Williamnagar and TT M Sangma, Secretary of the District Legal Services Authority and Gamchi Timre R Marak, the vice-chairperson of Meghalaya State Women’s Commission.

Earlier, Principal of the college, Fr. Sunny SJ while delivering the welcome address informed that Loyola College is an institution of higher education and contributes to the education of whole person thereby improving the dignity and quality of life of its students.
