BJP allies face tough fight against Cong in Assam’s first-phase election

GUWAHATI: The five Parliamentary Constituencies in the state that are going for polls in the first phase on April 11 include Tezpur, Kaliabor, Jorhat, Dibrugarh and Lakhimpur.
The trend during the electioneering indicates that the electoral battle for all these constituencies will be basically between the BJP and its local allies in Assam and the Congress. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP president Amit Shah have hit the campaign trail in Assam for the first phase polling besides other party star campaigners from the sate and outside. Congress president Rahul Gandhi led the campaign for the party in the state for the first phase in Assam.
Total 7603458 voters including 3865334 males, 3737970 females and 154 voters in Third Gender category will vote in these five Parliamentary Constituencies to elect their representative to the Lok Sabha.
Total 41 candidates including two women and 12 independents are contesting from these five Lok Sabha seats.
Poling will be held in total 9,574 polling stations across the five Parliamentary Constituencies in the first phase. There are total 47 Legislative Assembly segments under these five Parliamentary Constituencies.
There are total 14 Parliamentary Constituencies in Assam of which another five constituencies will go for polling on April 18 in the second phase of polling and the rest four constituencies will go for polls on April 23 in the third phase.
As per the trend during the electioneering the electoral battle in the five first phase constituencies is going to be basically between the BJP and its allies and the Congress.
In Kaliabor, the contest is between the Congress (sitting MP Gaurav Gogoi) versus the BJP-led alliance’s green horn Moni Madhab Mahanta (of AGP) while in the rest four constituencies the contest is confined between the BJP and Congress.
It is sitting BJP MP Rameswar Teli versus Congress veteran and former Union Minister, Paban Singh Ghatowar in Dibrugarh Constituency while sitting BJP MP, Prasan Baruah is pitted against Congress rival Anil Borgohain in Lakhimpur constituency.
In Jorhat, BJP candidate Topon Gogoi , a minister in the Assam is facing a tough fight against Congress first-timer Sushanta Borgohain. The BJP has not fielded sittin MP, Kamakhya Prasad Tasa from Jorhat this time.
In Tezpur, BJP has fielded Assam’s minister Pallab Lochan Das who is facing a tough challenge against Congress candidate and a retired IAS officer, MGVK Bhanu. The BJP opted for Pallab Lochan instead of sitting MP, Ram Prasad Sharma.
