Institutes collaborate to promote northeastern art in city
SHILLONG: An art exhibition on ‘North East cultural discourses: visual and text’ was organised by Swar Sangam, Kolkata in collaboration with Martin Luther Christian University (MLCU) in the city recently. The exhibition focused on depicting values and identities of the young generation through art including pictorial landscape, humanscape or urbanscape in a socio cultural context. Art forms like ‘painting to 3D design’ or ‘drawing to photography’ that were exhibited are art forms that pose a challenge to every young artist as it is not possible to develop them without perception and knowledge. The exhibition comprised of original book arts, illustrations, drawings, photographs, digital graphics and installations based on the cultural discourses of the North East like the holy kingdom and hornbill birds. More than 300 works were exhibited in the premises of MLCU. The faculty and students of the university attended the exhibition and interacted with the artists.

5th inter-school art competition
SHILLONG: The 5th inter-school art competition will be held at the Sri Aurobindo Institute of Indian Culture (SAIIC) in the city on April 27 at 10:30 am.The competition is being organised by city-based Mother’s School and will witness the participation of more than 300 students from 20 schools. Sangeeta Ghosh , Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda Cultural Centre, Quinton Road and Shorbory Ghosh , former Art Teacher, St. Edmund’s School will serve as the judges for the competition. The prize distribution ceremony will be held on May 11 which is also the birth anniversary of Nobel Laureate, Rabindranath Tagore at the SAIIC auditorium.

Special OPD camp on April 26
SHILLONG: The Department of Orthopaedics, NEIGRIHMS will organise a special paediatric orthopaedic OPD on April 26 to evaluate and treat childhood orthopaedic problems including assessment of children who are unable to stand or walk due to birth defects, cerebral palsy and rare diseases of bone, joint and spine. Renowned paediatric orthopaedic surgeons, Taral Nagda (Mumbai) and Sukalyan Dey (FAA Medical College, SS University of Health Sciences) will attend the OPD camp as the special invitees.

Army recruitment awareness
NONGSTOIN: The Indian Army Recruiting Zone (IARZ), Shillong in collaboration with the District Administration West Khasi Hills District organised a one-day army recruitment awareness programme for the youths of the district in the smart classroom of the DIET on Friday. Roshan Singh, Tester JCO and SK. Tiwari, havildar elaborated the rules and regulations and the criteria to join Indian Army. They informed that the Recruitment Rally to be held on May 2 to 7 is meant for the state and encourage the youths to seize the opportunity by applying in all categories online via www.joinindianarmy.nic.in and email [email protected]. The vacant posts will go to other states if youths here are unable to grasp this golden chance. Around a thousand of youths from across the district attended the programme which benefitted them to know the means to join Indian Army. The programme was presided over by PD. Sangma. ADC Pamphlets, army calendars, hangouts, stickers and other army publications were distributed during the gathering.

B Pharma course approved
SHILLONG: The Pharmacy Council of India has approved the implementation of the Pharmacy Science Course at the University of Science and Technology, Meghalaya (USTM). The academic session for the course will begin from July 2019. In a statement issued here on Friday, Chancellor of USTM Mahbubul Hoque stated, “Launch of the B. Pharma course at our University will not only help general students and especially those from Meghalaya, but will also encourage entrepreneurship in the region since in order to open any pharmacy one needs to be qualified.” Hoque expressed his gratitude to the state government for extending all kinds of support during the preparation stage by issuing important documents on time to get the approval from Pharmacy Council of India. Moreover, USTM is also set to introduce a nursing course for students by 2021. The PA Sangma International Medical College and Hospital, a dream project of USTM, will open in 2022.
