SHILLONG: Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has said the state government is in touch with the Centre to resolve all issues pertaining to border fencing in Meghalaya.
Speaking to newsmen, Sangma said border protection is important to ensure that there is no illegal immigration from across.
Admitting that there are many issues which are plaguing border fencing, he said the problems are complicated and every region through which the border passes has some concerns.
“Some people are yet to receive compensation while some are against the border marking and some want the fencing to be along the zero line”, he said.
He, however, said as and when border population raises the issues with him, he takes up the matter with the Home Ministry.
Meghalaya shares 443 km of Indo-Bangladesh border with a stretch of around 100 km still unfenced.
The decision of the government to construct the fence 150 yards inside the zero line is being opposed by land owners and pressure groups in the state who want it should come up on the zero line to prevent loss of arable land.
As a large chunk of the border in Meghalaya is open, many illegal activities such as smuggling of cattle and even illegal immigration take place.
