Mobile tower battery theft racket busted

GUWAHATI: Assam police busted a mobile tower battery theft racket, arresting six persons on the Rangia-Bhutan national highway in Nalbari district on Sunday evening and two persons here on Monday.

Police sources said a six-member gang which had been stealing batteries from mobile towers in Nalbari district and selling it in Guwahati were intercepted during routine checking and based on their statements, two more persons were arrested.

The police team from Tamulpur (Nalbari) arrived here on Monday morning and conducted a search in a godown opposite Gorchuk police station and recovered 24 batteries, six mobile phones, a bike and two vehicles used for the activities.

“We are on the lookout for the godown owner who is absconding. We suspect a larger racket might be involved for which we have started our investigation,” Tamulpur police officer-in-charge told The Shillong Times on Monday.
