SHILLONG: Congress MLA from Umroi, George B Lyngdoh on Saturday emphasized on the importance of extending social security benefits to building and construction workers.
In a letter addressed to the chairman of the of Meghalaya Building and Construction Workers Welfare Board, DP Wahlang, Lyngdoh stated that workers such as stone quarry workers, sand collectors, brick kiln workers including those involved in the manufacturing of cement blocks, mud block sand interlocking blocks, do not have access to social security schemes and should be included in the construction industry.
Pertaining to the implementation of the Meghalaya Building and Construction Workers Welfare fund in the state, he said that according to the current policy, workers engaged under contractors are entitled for schemes.
