TURA: Leaders and members of a conglomerate of Garo organizations headquartered in Tura have called for a public procession on May 10th to protest the recent rape and murder of a 7 year old child by a migrant worker in Megua Songmong village of South Garo Hills.

The Garoland State Movement Committee, All A’chik Youth Welfare Society, All India Garo Union, Interim body of the Garo Students Union and the Tura Government College Students Union, in a meeting held at the college on Monday, unanimously decided to call for a public procession on Friday.

GSMC Chairman Nikman Ch Marak informed that the public procession would begin from Chandmari field to William Point via DC office at 11 AM to raise a strong voice against the atrocities being perpetrated on children.

“We are also urging the people of Garo Hills to hold a day of mourning for the victim and her family by shutting down schools, colleges, offices and shops for two hours on May 13th,” announced Nikman Marak.

According to another student leader, Balkarin Ch Marak, co-chairman of GSMC, crimes against women and children are increasing in Garo Hills. “In order to prevent such crimes strong action is needed from NGOs, Nokmas and the people,” he said.

AIGU secretary Sengban R Sangma, GSU interim body’s additional general secretary Brening M Sangma and AAYWS general secretary Chegan N Marak called for unity among the people and strong legal punishment against the offenders.
