TURA: Members of a student organization in South West Garo Hills district, the All A’chik Youth Federation (AAYF), have seized a truck load of timber that was being smuggled to neighbouring Assam without any documents on Thursday night.

The Betasing AAYF members intercepted a Tura registered truck (ML08 C 8842) carrying approximately thirty logs of non-sal timber logs on the Betasing PWD road at around 10:30 in the night. On being checked it was found that the occupants did not have any transit pass or other documents for the consignment.

The vehicle with the timber was handed over to the range forest office of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) by the AAYF.

Illegal felling inside forests of Garo Hills and smuggling of timber into neighbouring Assam continues to take place despite claims of vigil by authorities in the region.
