SHILLONG: A digital planetarium is under construction at NEHU, Tura Campus in collaboration with the state government.
This was informed by NEHU in a statement issued here on Friday.
The Central Public Works Department (CPWD) has been given the construction work of two hostels, M.Ed building in Shillong campus and two hostels including staff quarters for NEHU, Tura campus.
In addition, it said that during the tenure of Prof SK Srivastava, Vice-Chancellor of NEHU, the ranking of the university in NIRF moved up to 39 (from 62 in previous year) in the University category. According to the statement, with constant persuasion with the UGC, the university has received approval to open two new departments— Department of Geology and Department of Forestry.
“Deen Dayal Upad-hyaya Community College was set up in Wahiajer and has started functioning under the able stewardship of Prof H Lamin as the Principal In-charge, which was a long pending demand from the Jaintia Hills. AICTE approval was accorded to the Engineering and Management which was long pending for more than a decade,” the statement said.
Other initiatives taken by the VC are NAAC assessment and the university has been accredited with ‘A’ Grade with an institutional score of 3.20, (up from the earlier score of 3.03) during the NAAC assessment in 2017, promotion of hundred teachers, payment to daily wage employees.
Improvement of infrastructure facilities was taken up by the VC and geysers were provided to students and staff.
It also added that the VC has signed an MOU with Chulalongkorn University, Thailand after the visit of Her Royal Highness, Princess Mahachakri Sirindhorn of Thailand. Besides, a Design & Innovation Centre has been set up in the university with the hub and spoke model for the whole North East region.
It also clarified that the release of NEHU Teachers Association Annual Grant has been withheld because NEHUTA had given a call to boycott the XXV Convocation held on November 28, 2018.
“NEHUTA being an association under higher education cannot utilise the fund received from the government for religious purpose. NEHUTA being an Employees Association established under the Statute 44 of the NEHU Acts & Statutes has violated the Statute 44 (3), by giving the convocation boycott call which is an important function for our graduating students and thereby bringing down the image of the university,” the statement added.
