GUWAHATI: Hailakandi district administration in Assam asked the traders and merchants to continue with their normal trade and business so that it does not have any cascading effect on the economy of the violence-affected district.
At a meeting convened by the district administration at DC’s conference hall here on Saturday, Deputy Commissioner, Keerthi Jalli appealed to the different merchant associations across the district to cooperate with the administration in bringing back lasting and durable peace and to put the economy back on the rails.
Extending support and cooperation to the traders and businessmen, Jalli said the administration was with them and would do everything possible to ensure normal trade and economic activities.
In the meeting, the traders demanded adequate compensation to those who incurred losses due to the violence. Jalli told them that the administration has already done assessment of the damage and dispatched a detailed report to the Government for necessary compensation.
The traders also urged the administration to install CCTVs at the main thoroughfares to detect any anti-social and subversive activities.
They also asked the administration to initiate stern action against those who posted objectionable posts in the social media platforms following the outbreak of violence.
The meeting unanimously decided to hold a Shantiyatra to assure members of the public that all stand together. A padyatra was immediately taken out from DC’s office that traversed through the main market areas of the town. It appealed to all stakeholders to have no fear and keep shops open till 9-10 pm and to work together for the development of the district through entrepreneurship and enterprise.
“The padyatra was taken out to spread the message loud and clear that the situation in the town is stable and trade and business can resume fully for ensuring progress of the district, ” said DC, Jalli, leading the rally from the front with Superintendent of Police, Mohneesh Mishra, officials of the administration, merchants and traders in tow.
