SHILLONG: State NPP president WR Kharlukhi said the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) will sit to discuss on what must have gone wrong with the consensus candidate of the MDA.
The MDA’s consensus candidate, Jemino Mawthoh, failed to prevent Congress’s Vincent Pala’s from winning a hat trick from the Shillong Lok Sabha seat.
“We will sit as MDA, we will need to have a post mortem and realise what has gone wrong with the candidate,” Kharlukhi told a section of the press on Thursday.
Asked whether the allegations that some of the MDA allies did not support Mawthoh, Kharlukhi said it is only allegations and added that leaders will not resort to such actions.
NPP failed to draw support of the people from other states of the country and the solace for NPP came in the form of Agatha Sangma’s win in the Tura Lok Sabha seat and Ferlin Sangma’s victory against the wife of late Clement Marak, June Marak in the Selsella by-poll. On the road ahead for the NPP, he said, “The people have given us confidence and we have to work, because we have to answer in 2023.”
He congratulated people of Garo Hills for giving resounding victory to Agatha and reposing their faith in the party by electing Ferlin from Selsella.
Asked about NPP in other states, Kharlukhi said the party will make efforts to spread its wings to other states as well while it has already laid its foundation in Khasi and Jaintia Hills.
Commenting on the setback to Congress , he said, “Congress should realise that it is no longer the force in national politics.
At the time when Congress was at the helm of affairs, the BJP realised the weakness and forged alliances and through the alliances, the Congress was brought down and slowly the BJP has reached a stage where the congress could cannot do anything against it.”
He observed that the failure of the Congress to stitch an alliance in Uttar Pradesh cost them in Delhi. Giving a suggestion to the Congress, he said the grand old party should learn the politics that for the time being the party should have somebody else to fight with them so that they can counter the BJP.
On the Mahagathbandhan, Kharlukhi said the verdict on May 23 revealed that the people have discarded caste and religious politics.
