New HC Chief Justice to assess ground realities in Meghalaya

SHILLONG: The new Chief Justice of the High Court of Meghalaya, Justice Ajay Kumar Mittal has stated that he would like to understand various problems of Meghalaya and would try to solve those.

Speaking to newsmen after being sworn as the Chief Justice, Justice Mittal said that he would like to visit all the districts and see how things are functioning

“I would like to get firsthand information and if anything is required, I would like to make improvement in the system,” he said.

Earlier, Mittal was sworn in by Meghalaya Governor, Tathagata Roy as the Chief Justice of the High Court of Meghalaya at the Raj Bhavan here.

The President of India recently appointed Mittal as the Chief Justice of the High Court of Meghalaya after the Supreme Court Collegium on April 8 had recommended his name. He has replaced the former Chief Justice Mohammad Yaqoob Mir, who has attained the age of superannuation.

Born on September 30, 1958 at Chandigarh, Justice Ajay Kumar Mittal  passed B.Com. (Hons.) from Sri Ram College of Commerce, Delhi University in the year 1977 and did LL.B. from Faculty of Law, Delhi University in 1980.

 He was elevated to the Bench of High Court of Punjab and Haryana on January 9, 2004 and remained the Acting Chief Justice of High Court of Punjab and Haryana during May 4 to June 2, 2018.
