Man gets life imprisonment for fratricide
NONGPOH: The District and Sessions Court has sentenced one Spelling Kurbah (30) to life imprisonment for killing his brother. The court also slapped a fine of Rs 50,000 on him. It may be mentioned that on December 14, 2016 around 7.30 pm, the accused struck his brother Bartyu Kurbah with a machete at Amkheri village near Umsiang in Ri Bhoi. The victim received serious injuries on his front neck and on the wrist of his left hand and died on the spot. Further, the Court also directed the government to pay an amount of Rs 300,000 to the family of Bartu Kurbah as compensation.

EDU EXPO underway in city
SHILLONG: The 8th edition of ‘EDUEXPO SHILLONG, 2019’ was inaugurated at All Saint’s Hall, IGP Point on Tuesday. The EDUEXPO, which will conclude on Wednesday, is an initiative of Impact Media, a leading event management group of the region to bridge the gap between the students and premier educational institutes of North East as well various reputed institutes and Universities from across the entire country. EDUEXPO is a platform for the students to meet some of the best institutes of the country and gives them a chance to interact one on one with deans, faculties and counsellors of different institutes. They get free & first hand accurate information about the courses, fee structures, placements, etc., of various institutes.

Rally on VDP held
JOWAI: The office of the Superintendent of Police in West Jaintia Hills organised a rally on Village Defense Party (VDP). The programme was attended by around 300 VDP members at the District Auditorium, Mynthong, Jowai. In his introductory speech, the Additionall SP, Chetri, urged all to create awareness in their respective villages about legal matters. There was an interactive session between the police and members of the VDP.

MUPSTA to meet on June 1
SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Upper Primary School Teachers Association (MUPSTA) Sohra Sub- Divisional Unit, East Khasi Hills, will hold its general meeting at Sohra Twa Presbyterian Secondary School from 11 am on June 1. The meeting will discuss various issues pertaining to strengthening the functioning of MUPSTA at the sub-divisional level. State-level leaders are expected to be present in the meeting.

Training programme
SHILLONG: The NABH has requested to hold a one-day training programme at NEIGRIHMS by enrolling the interested faculty and residents. Few government doctors as selected by NABH, too, will be participating in the training programme. The training will be delivered by the Asst. Director, NABH, New Delhi on May 30 from 10am-4pm. The programme will help in capacity building within NEIGRIHMS by initiating the participant faculty on quality and accreditation aspects of health care services and hospitals.
