GUWAHATI: Environment sessions beyond the school curriculum backed up by documentaries on wildlife and nature conservation will form the crux of a workshop for students here on June 9.

As part of a long term programme on environment conservation, “Asam Sahitya Sabhar Seuj Jatra”, apex literary organisation, Asam Sahitya Sabha, will conduct the workshop for students from Class VI to Class XII. The programme is being held in association with Jyoti Chitraban and Nature’s Beckon, an NGO working for wildlife and ecology conservation in the Northeast.

“The idea behind the workshop to be held at Jyoti Chitraban is to inculcate a sense of awareness and love for environment conservation among school children. A documentary on ecology will also be shown during the workshop,” Pankaj Kumar Dutta, Asam Sahitya Sabha spokesperson and coordinator of the programme, toldThe Shillong Times on Wednesday.

The topics to be touched upon by trained instructors include wildlife behaviour, human-animal conflict and avian fauna among others.

“There would be about 150 seats for which aspiring participants would have to send applications to the city offices of the organisations,” Dutta, who is also the coordinator of Nature’s Beckon (Guwahati zone), said.

Asked whether it has plans to conduct similar workshops in the border areas of Assam and Meghalaya where human-animal conflict has become a burning problem, he said either the Sabha or the NGO would be open to any proposals in this regard.

“As a matter of fact, Nature’s Beckon has been active in ecology and wildlife conservation from the 1980s,” he added.
