From slums to defence headquarters, city celebrates World Environment Day

SHILLONG: With the entire world observing the World Environment Day on Wednesday, the city witnessed a large number of public involvement who came forward to lend a hand for a greener Shillong.
The SPARK Children and Community people celebrated World Environment Day by organising cleanliness drives, and planting trees, amongst other activities across slums and villages of Mawlong, Mawlynrei, Pongkung, Rangmen and Bara Bazaar.
SPARK has made a provision where each child will plant a tree every month as an important part of their curriculum. This year too more than 300 saplings were planted by the children and community people who also took part.
To observe and mark World Environment Day, the Hynniewtrep Tourist Taxi Association (HTTA) organised a tree plantation programme on Wednesday at Nichols Roy Bible College, Sohryngkham.
Altogether, 300 saplings were planted at the catchment area of the college’s fresh water source.
Members of the association, faculty of the college, advisors of the HTTA and former members of Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) also took part in the programme.
The Border Security Force celebrated World Environment Day by carrying out a plantation drive. Around 1,200 saplings were planted on Wednesday.
The drive will continue for two days. During this campaign, BSF is planning to plant saplings all over India (BSF deployment) to turn BSF campuses greener for a better environment.
The Bihari Welfare association (Student’s wing) organised a cleaning drive and tree plantation on the occasion of World environment day at Police reserve headquarters with the help of Meghalaya police.
The Sant Nirankari Charitable Foundation (SNCF) undertook a cleanliness drive at the Civil Hospital premises on Wednesday.
Around 55 to 60 volunteers from SNCF, with brooms and baskets in hand, collected the garbage and cleaned the Civil Hospital premises.
Sant Niranakari Mandal’s Shillong-based Mukhi Premnath Prasad in his message said, “ Social endeavours like cleanliness, tree plantation and blood donation by the volunteers of SNCF will continue in future to guide and motivate people to join such noble causes. Our aim is to regard oneness of humanity on the principle of unity in diversity with worldly brotherhood and to demonstrate that our happiness in the society is strongly interdependent.”
The Northeastern Sector, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), observed World Environment Day on Wednesday.
Large number of plantation was done by officers and jawans at NES Headquarters campus and 67 Bn-HQ, Polo ground, under the supervision of Prakash D, IPS, IG, NES, CRPF and oath was taken to save the environment.
The MES Builders’ Association of India, Shillong Branch, organised a tree plantation drive on Wednesday at Air Force Station, Eastern Air Command. ChairmanAnil Bajaj, Secreatary S MM Singh Kapoor along with all the members were supported by Garrison Engineer (I) AF, Major Dhawal Shintre and his MES Staff.
Nongmensong Dorbar Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) UP and STC School celebrated World Environment Day with the planting of trees at Urkaliar and Mawphlang where the Chief Guest was the Chairman of KHADC PN Syiem.
