Sonowal hands over cheques to kin of slain jawans

GUWAHATI: In a move to give succor to the bereaved family members of the jawans who have laid down their lives while performing their duties for the motherland, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Thursday paid a visit to the families of two such slain jawans and handed over the cheques as a part of government’s financial assistance.

Sonowal visited the residence of slain SSB jawan, Neeraj Chetry at Kauri Pothar in Biswanath District and paid floral tributes. While spending time with the parents of Neeraj Chetry who was killed in Jarkhand on June 1, Sonowal handed over a cheque worth Rs 20 lakh on behalf of Assam Government. He also handed over another cheque worth Rs. 15 lakh given by the SSB.  

Later Chief Minister Sonowal also paid a visit to the residence of another jawan of Assam Rifles Kalidas Sharma who was killed in Nagaland by the proscribed militant group at Khonamukh near Balipara in Sonitpur district. Chief Minister Sonowal also handed over a cheque worth Rs 20 lakh as per the commitment of the government.

Chief Minister Sonowal while paying tributes to the soldiers said, “The state is proud of the unparalleled sacrifice, patriotism and sense of dutifulness exhibited by the jawans”.

He also said that the onslaught against insurgency would continue as the people of the country have extended support to the tirade announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the fight against militancy.
