CM must intervene and decide in 10 days, asserts association

GUWAHATI: Thousands of the contractual Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) qualified teachers of Assam under the umbrella organisation All Assam Primary TET Teachers Association took to the streets across the state, demanding immediate intervention of the chief minister for regularisation of jobs of 41,000 teachers.

The association has threatened to stage a “Dispur gherao” programme on June 29, if the decision of “unconditional regularisation of all contractual TET qualified teachers with full pay protection” is not taken by the state government by June 28, 2019.

“The incumbent government before coming to power in 2016 had clearly mentioned in its vision document that the services of all TET qualified teachers would be regularised, which has not been the case so far. Therefore, we demand that a Cabinet meeting is held and the decisions regarding unconditional regularisation and full pay protection taken in the next ten days,” Diparnav Ghosh, general secretary of the association toldThe Shillong Times on Tuesday.

The association submitted a memorandum to chief minister through the Kamrup metro deputy commissioner on Tuesday.

Dharnas were staged across the districts of the state, condemning the education minister, Siddhartha Bhattacharya’s recent comment in a recent live radio interview, where he said that TET teachers would have to renew their certificate of the test like a driver’s licence from time to time.

Slogans such as “Stop Insulting Teachers”, “Will Continue Protest” were shouted by the agitating teachers during the processions carried out on Tuesday.

The agitating teachers had on June 15 started an online campaign against the education minister’s comment by adding the ‘driver’ prefix to their names on social media platforms.
