TURA: Williamnagar police have busted a gang attempting to sell sophisticated weapons from the erstwhile GNLA and arrested four persons, including a juvenile, on Wednesday.
SP of East Garo Hills, RTG Momin said based on information that some people are trying to sell AK-rifles, a sting operation was launched by the force and SF-10 commandoes on Wednesday during which three persons were arrested along with the two AK-56 rifles.
Police arrested Sujit N Marak of MECL Colony Williamnagar, Jeblune M Marak (29) Of Samanda Chinemgre and Jewil Ch. Momin (20) of Nangapa Chidimit.
One juvenile who was involved in the case was also detained.
How the weapons came into possession of the gang is being probed but intelligence reports indicate that the prime accused Sujit was once a close confidante of deceased GNLA commander-in-chief Sohan D Shira and may have known the hideouts of the outfit where the weapons were concealed.
It has long been rumoured that the defunct outfit had concealed dozens of weapons in the nearby forests and hills.
Several seizures took place after the demise of the group but many are reported to have remained hidden in forests.
