Swachh Sundar Shauchalaya Day observed in WKH
Nongstoin: A programme on the occasion of Swachh Sundar Shauchalaya Day, organised by the office of the District Swachh Bharat Mission, Nongstoin was held at Nongstoin College on Friday. Deputy Commissioner T Lyngwa who graced the occasion as the chief guest said, “Poverty should not be the reason behind uncleanliness.” He also informed that the government has provided all means to achieve a clean India through various projects under the Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM). The Swachh Sundar Shauchalaya is a national flagship programme which aims to beautify toilets in order to encourage citizens to do away with open defecation. It may be mentioned that within a period of one month, the office of the SBM and PHE of West Khasi Hills had painted 38,812 toilets from 668 villages where 5 of them had been nominated for State Bharat Swachh Mission. Others who were present included A Nongbri, SDO Civil Mairang, RS Nongbri, SE, PHE Western Circle, W Syiemlieh, SDO PHE. The programme was presided over by D Shabong, member secretary DWSM and the vote of thanks was offered by JRNongsiej, district coordinator SBM. A felicitation ceremony was also held for Medarius Langrin of Mawlait village, who received the National Swachh Sundar Shauchalaya award, along with five Sordars, ten beneficiaries of the SBM block level staff, SLRM volunteers and Honest Wanniang of T7 News.

Prog on poverty, health held
JOWAI: The West Jaintia District Legal Service Authority in collaboration with the office of the District Medical & Health Officer organised an awareness programme on poverty alleviation scheme-cum-health mela at Mooblang football ground in Iooksi Village on Friday. The health mela centered on the theme ‘universal health coverage’ and was chaired by the secretary of the District Legal Service Authority of West Jaintia Hills District, DS Marbaniang who informed that the objective of the programme is to spread awareness about the Poverty Alleviation Scheme which is available in the district. District Medical Health Officer KC Ajar said that the health mela aims to provide health care facilities to all 20 surrounding villages of the area and urged the gathering to take advantage of such an opportunity. Medical specialists from the office of the District Medical & Health  Officer and Jowai Civil Hospital, Ialong conducted the free medical checkups and distributed free medicine to the patients. Specialists who were present included doctors from the obstetrics & gynaecology departments, pediatricians, ENTs, dentists and doctors from AYUSH. Around 1,200 people attended the health mela.

School observes Van Mahotsav
SHILLONG: Army Public School, Shillong, celebrated Van Mahotsav within the school premises on Friday. The programme was organised in collaboration with the Social Forestry Division, East Khasi Hills, Shillong and was attended by government officials namely MJA Sangma, Divisional Forest Officer, Social Forestry Division. The programme included a tree plantation drive in which MJA Sangma and the principal of Army Public School, Rajeevan P, planted saplings in the school campus. Around 100 saplings were planted by the students of classes 9 and 10.
