SHILLONGMeghalaya Fisheries Minister, Coming One Ymbon said the department aimed to produce fish to uplift the economy of the people of the state.

In this connection, the Fisheries department has started to organise review meetings in each of districts.

On Monday, Ymbon visited East Jaiñtia Hills district while on Tuesday he was in West Jaiñtia Hills district. He held review meetings with the deputy commissioners and BDOs of the two districts.

During these review meetings the minister directed the officers of the fisheries department to submit reports on the status of the schemes in their respective governments for the benefit of the fish farmers.

Ympon urged the officers of the fisheries department to take up the schemes seriously and to help the fish farmers in whatever way they can.

The minister also urged that the schemes for the fish farmers, like construction of fish ponds should be done only after properly studying its feasibility so that funds are not wasted.

Ympon also urged the, officers of the fisheries department to keep records of the fish seedlings so that account can be kept on the production of fishes.

“If we can first do the above, it will be the start of putting our confidence on the fish farmers that they are able to supply fishes to markets in the state and not wait for those from Andhra Pradesh,” the Fisheries Minister said.

During this two-day review meeting to the two districts of Jaintia Hills, Ymbon was accompanied by Director A. L Mawlong and other officers.

The fisheries minister also visited some of the fish ponds under the care of the department.
