SHILLONG: Ri Bhoi police has registered a suo motu case against Guwahati- based G Plus print and digital media for republishing an alleged fabricated news item accusing “locals of spilling oil” on the Jorabat-Umiam Expressway to harass commuters.
The media portal had published a news item based on inputs from certain commuters who alleged that residents spilt mobil or oil on the highway leading to accidents and then extorting hefty sums of money in the name of providing help.
The Assam-based media portal, while quoting ‘unnamed people’, reported that in a recent incident a resident of Guwahati was travelling with her relatives to Shillong when their car fell into a drain and soon after the mishap a group of locals appeared on the scene and demanded money to help them.
Earlier, too, the same media organisation had published the same news.
