SHILLONG: Deputy Chief Executive Member of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), Pyniaid Syiem said that unfair practices whether in Ïewduh and outside the Ïewduh areas would be monitored by the Council authority.

This was in response to a supplementary query raised by Congress MDC, Charles Marngar during summer session of KHADC. The MDC pointed out that farmers in rural markets that are within the jurisdiction of the KHADC, are harassed by traders.

Syiem said stringent measures would be taken against traders from outside the state who randomly deduct the weight of agricultural produce brought by rural farmers.

Executive Member (EM) in charge of Market, Jambor War said the steps had been taken to stop unfair practice prevailing at Ïewduh.

Congress MDC Ronnie Lyngdoh raised query on whether the farmers who bring their agricultural produce to be sold at Ïew dielang at Ïewduh are being subjected to unfair practice by traders/middlemen.

He said the KHADC should also discuss the matter with the Department of Legal Metrology to ensure that violators get punish as per laws.

Forest

The KHADC, Executive Member in charge of Forest, Victor Ranee asserted that some forest guards play truant and collect their salaries at the end of the day and warned of disciplinary action against them.

With regard to issues of prevention of deforestation, he said if people cut down trees, they should plant a new one again. He added awareness programmes were being carried out.

Congress MDC Ronnie Lyngdoh opposed the setting up of a resort by Hima Mylliem at Upper Shillong which, he said, would affect the water quality supplied to Shillong city.  He added that the catchment areas should be protected and safeguarded.
